The Do’s and Don’ts of Self-hypnosis

Self-hypnosis is a powerful practice that involves inducing a trance-like state to focus the mind, enhance relaxation, and promote positive change. I am a huge advocate for self-hypnosis and in my and my client’s experience, it is completely safe, under normal circumstances. However, it does demand respect for its depth and complexity as in some instances, it bears potential risks if ventured into unprepared.

It is strongly advised that you refrain from using any type of mind-altering substance before and after going into a trance state unless you are under the supervision of an experienced Shaman or doctor.

Unfortunately, a young woman, whom we will call Mia, was experimenting with a dangerous concoction known as ‘lean’. This is a mixture of cough syrup, alcohol, and other synthetic drugs that is notorious for its potent and disorienting effects.

In her impaired state, Mia stumbled upon a guided meditation on YouTube. The session was led by an individual with no professional training in hypnotherapy.

What followed was nearly two years of what Mia described a “demonic possession”. She experienced terrifying hallucinations, severe emotional distress, and a sense of being controlled by an external entity.

This period of her life was marked by confusion, fear, and helplessness. It wasn’t until she sought professional help, from a psychiatrist, a behavioral specialist, and a psychic medium, that Mia began the long and difficult process of recovery.

Through a combination of therapy, spiritual cleansing, and personal resilience, Mia was eventually able to reclaim her life from the grips of this terrifying ordeal.

Mia's subsequent experiences could be partly explained by the term "substance-induced psychotic disorder," a condition where individuals experience psychosis symptoms as a direct result of substance abuse. These symptoms can include hallucinations, delusions, and a disconnection from reality. The sense of 'demonic possession' that Mia described could be a manifestation of these hallucinations and delusions.

Mia’s story is an extreme example of the perilous nature of engaging in self-hypnosis or any trance-inducing practices while inebriated. The substances not only cloud judgment, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality but also weaken the mind’s natural defenses, making it susceptible to negative influences and experiences.

Furthermore, the guidance of an untrained individual in such a delicate process can lead to harmful suggestions and outcomes, as seen in Mia’s case.

Mental Health and Self-Hypnosis

The caution extends further to individuals struggling with mental health issues. Autohypnosis, or self-hypnosis, demands a stable and controlled mindset to navigate safely. For those battling mental health conditions, the practice can unintentionally exacerbate symptoms, trigger latent conditions, or lead to disassociation and further psychological distress.

The mind is vulnerable during hypnosis because the Critical mind is relaxed leaving the subconscious mind open to suggestions i.e. an altered learning state. This, coupled with existing mental health challenges, creates a scenario where the individual is at risk of a negative and potentially dangerous experience.

Professional guidance is not just recommended; it is crucial. A licensed therapist who is well-trained in hypnotherapy can provide a safe environment, tailor the experience to the individual’s needs, and monitor for any adverse reactions.

Hypnotherapists without a license in mental health or medicine are not allowed to treat clients with mental illness.

Mia’s ordeal is a powerful reminder of the responsibilities we hold toward our mental and emotional well-being. The allure of self-discovery and healing through practices like self-hypnosis must be balanced with an awareness of the risks involved. For those in a vulnerable state, whether due to substance use or mental health challenges, the path to self-improvement must be navigated with caution and professional support.

The journey of healing and self-improvement is a noble pursuit. Yet, it is essential to approach it with respect for the complexities of the human mind. Let Mia’s story be a lesson in the importance of clear-mindedness, professional guidance, and the dangers of underestimating the power of our subconscious minds.

Venturing into the subconscious mind can uncover more than intended, and without a guide, one might find themselves lost.

Here are some things to consider before engaging in self-hypnosis:

1. Educate Yourself: Dive into reputable sources and books on hypnosis to understand the basics and techniques. Websites like the bemagicschool.org offer resources and information.

2. Learn from a trained hypnotherapist: consider starting with guided sessions from a certified hypnotherapist. This experience can provide a foundational understanding and a safer introduction to the practice as self-hypnosis cannot be used for all issues. Lack of proper knowledge and experience in self-hypnosis can lead to misuse or misunderstanding of the techniques.

3. Unearthing Buried Memories: The subconscious mind is a deep sea, hiding memories and emotions beneath its surface. Using self-hypnosis to remember a hidden memory might inadvertently bring these to the forefront, potentially overwhelming you and causing great harm if you are unprepared or lack support.

4. False Memories: The power of suggestion in hypnosis is strong. Without guidance, one might inadvertently plant false memories or accept harmful suggestions, skewing our perception of reality and self.

5. Uncharted Psychological Territories: For those with unresolved psychological issues or mental health conditions, self-hypnosis can be like stirring the waters of a turbulent sea, possibly exacerbating these conditions.

6. Set Clear Intentions: Know what you want to achieve with your self-hypnosis sessions. Clear goals help guide the process and protect against unwanted suggestions.

Now that I’ve scared you to death with the potential dangers of self-hypnosis, let’s look at the amazing benefits of this transformative practice when used properly and safely.

Benefits of Self-Hypnosis

Imagine having a tool that allows you to tap into the vast reserves of your mind, a key to unlock your potential. That’s what self-hypnosis offers—a pathway to the inner self, where transformation begins.

1. Stress Reduction and Relaxation: In the fast-paced world we live in, stress is a constant. Self-hypnosis stands as a beacon of calm, teaching the body and mind to relax. This state of relaxation not only soothes the nerves but also benefits physical health, reducing the risk of stress-related ailments.

2. Enhanced Self-Control and Behavior Change: Want to kick a bad habit or instill a new, positive one? Self-hypnosis empowers you with the self-control to make these changes. By directly influencing the subconscious, it facilitates a deeper impact on behaviors and patterns.

3. Improved Focus and Concentration: The practice sharpens the mind, enhancing your ability to concentrate and maintain focus. This improvement spills over into various aspects of life, from work to personal projects, driving productivity and efficiency.

4. Emotional Healing and Release: Self-hypnosis provides a safe space for emotional introspection, allowing for the identification and release of pent-up emotions. This process fosters emotional healing, contributing to overall mental health and well-being. **Be sure to work with your trusted hypnotherapist on deep trauma-related emotional issues that are triggering. **

5. Pain Management: Studies suggest that hypnosis can be an effective tool in managing chronic pain, offering an alternative or complement to traditional pain management techniques.

6. Motivation: Sometimes getting started or completing tasks can be challenging especially if it’s a new behavior or something we are not too excited about. Sel-hypnosis is a great tool that helps reprogram healthier subconscious thoughts and habits into our daily lives.

Seeking Professional Guidance

Considering the potential pitfalls, the importance of seeking guidance from a trained and experienced hypnotherapist cannot be overstated. We serve as the experienced guide, helping you navigate the complexities of the mind, and ensuring your journey is both safe and beneficial. Tailoring the experience to individual needs, a hypnotherapist can help you explore the depths of your subconscious mind while safeguarding against the risks.

Self-hypnosis is a powerful tool for personal growth and healing, offering the promise of a deeper understanding of oneself and the ability to foster significant life changes. However, like any journey of transformation, it requires preparation, respect for the process, and, often, the guidance of someone experienced. Venturing into the realm of the subconscious mind is not without its challenges and risks, but with the right approach, it can be a journey of profound discovery and empowerment.

Setting Boundaries for Safety

As you embark on this journey, setting clear boundaries is essential. Understand what you are comfortable exploring in your sessions and what might be better addressed with professional help. Self-hypnosis should be a practice of self-care and not a substitute for professional therapy, especially for deep-seated psychological issues.

The Power of Positive Suggestions

In the practice of self-hypnosis, the power of suggestion is your steering wheel. Crafting positive, affirmative suggestions aligned with your goals can guide your subconscious towards desired outcomes. However, it's crucial to frame these suggestions correctly, focusing on what you want to achieve rather than what you wish to avoid.

Embracing the Journey with Awareness

Awareness and mindfulness throughout the process can enhance the benefits of self-hypnosis. Being fully present allows you to observe changes, gauge your comfort level, and adjust as necessary. It's a practice of tuning in, not tuning out, enabling a deeper connection with your inner self.

Seeking Professional Insight When Needed

Recognizing when to seek professional help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you encounter areas within yourself that are particularly challenging or if you experience adverse reactions during self-hypnosis, consulting a professional can provide the support and guidance needed to navigate these complexities safely. I offer free consultations if you ever have questions or need guidance.

The Path of Enlightened Self-Care

Self-hypnosis is a powerful tool in the journey toward self-improvement, offering a path to tranquility, enhanced focus, and emotional healing. It embodies the essence of enlightened self-care, empowering us to tap into our inner resources. However, this journey requires a mindful approach, an understanding of its potential pitfalls, and, when necessary, the guidance of a professional.

By respecting the process and proceeding with care, self-hypnosis can be a rewarding and transformative experience. It's a testament to the power of the mind and our ability to harness it for personal growth. So, if you're considering this path, take it step by step, with awareness and an open heart. The journey within is the most profound journey of all, and self-hypnosis can be a valuable companion along the way.
